America’s oldest continuously operating railroad features an authentic early 20th-century steam train experience aboard the 9-mile, 45-minute round trip through Lancaster County Amish farmland. Carefully restored and maintained steam locomotives and wooden passenger coaches punctuate an entertaining, relaxing, and educational ride.
Choices
Strasburg Rail Road offers a variety of passenger accommodations, including Coach, Open Air, Dining, First Class, or Business Class. Options to disembark at one of two quaint picnic groves provide a unique way to disconnect from the daily grind. There’s something for everyone with special events such as the Wine & Cheese Train, Santa’s Paradise Express, rides with Thomas the Tank Engine, and unique In-Cab Experiences. Behind-the-scenes tours offer a glimpse into the enginehouse and on-site restoration facilities.
When to go
Steam trains operate daily, April through October, and on weekends and for special events during February, March, November, and December.
Good to know
Locomotives pull trains tender-first on the outbound trips and engine-first on the return. Sit on the running right-hand side of the train out of Strasburg for the best view of the locomotive switching from one end of its train to the other.
Worth doing
Though the scenic train ride is the centerpiece of a trip to Strasburg Rail Road, don’t miss the opportunity to go behind the scenes with a Hostling Tour or Shop Tour. Additionally, during select special events and throughout the summer season, fun extra attractions are offered, including the Cranky Cars for younger visitors, and the miniature steam train ride pulled by a restored Cagney locomotive.
