Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad logoOriginally chartered in 1888, and now departing from the former Reading Company freight station in Middleton, the Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad today offers a relaxing 11-mile round trip along the Swatara Creek and the remnants of the former Union Canal.

Choices

Excursions are powered by vintage diesel locomotives leading restored open-window 1920s coaches from the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad.

When to go

The standard Milk & Honey Express excursions are operated on select weekends from May to October. Special events and excursions such as Santa Claus trains, Easter Trains, Pumpkin Patch trains, and the 3 C’s Caboose Rides (Cocoa, Cookies, and Cabooses!) are operated seasonally year-round. Passengers should check the railroad’s website for the most up-to-date information and schedule.

Good to know

Formerly part of the Reading Company, the Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad also provides freight service using Alco diesel switchers. At the Middletown yard, the railroad displays a collection of locomotives and rolling stock that includes antique freight equipment, streetcars, and passenger cars. A 1956 and a 1969 Alco diesel may occasionally be used in tourist service, but these locomotives are seen as regulars hauling freight to and from the Norfolk Southern interchanges at either Middletown or Hummelstown.

Worth doing

Nothing finer than breakfast or lunch at Kuppy’s Diner, a short walk from the railroad’s boarding station. In Hershey, you can hop on more than 60 rides, including roller coasters and water rides, at Hersheypark amusement park.

Don’t miss

Tour nearby Indian Echo Caverns for an interesting underground outing.

Getting there

Middletown is situated between Harrisburg and Hershey, both 10 miles away, and 100 miles from Philadelphia. Easily accessible from the PA Turnpike (Harrisburg East Exit), PA 283, and only 2 blocks from Amtrak’s Keystone Middletown train station.
