Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway logoThe Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway offers 70-minute excursions. Trips depart from the picturesque former Central Railroad of New Jersey depot in the tourist destination of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.

Choices

A variety of options await passengers on Lehigh Gorge Scenic trains. Standard coach, “Crown Class” coach, First Class dome car, and open-air cars are featured on most trains. During the summer months, caboose rentals are available for parties of up to six.

When to go

The railroad currently operates year-round with seven-day service offered from May through October. Passengers are encouraged to review the latest schedule updates, which are posted on the railroad’s website.

Good to know

In 1953, the towns of Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk merged into one town with the name of Jim Thorpe when that famous athlete was buried there. Looking for a place that would help develop a memorial for her husband, who had no previous ties to the area, Thorpe’s widow found assistance from the two towns.

Worth doing

Explore the town of Jim Thorpe, a charming village of shops, stores, and B&Bs, many featuring Victorian architecture. The town was once known as the Switzerland of America for its steep hillsides, narrow streets, and terraced gardens.

Don’t miss

On the bike train to White Haven, you ride the train up Lehigh Gorge and pedal your bike back the 25 miles to Jim Thorpe along a scenic bike trail.

Getting there

Located in the heart of the Poconos, Jim Thorpe is approximately 90 miles from Philadelphia. From there, take I-476 to Exit 74. Then take Route 209 south into Jim Thorpe, where it becomes Susquehanna Street, and follow it to the railway.
