Electric City Trolley Museum logoThe Electric City Trolley Museum is on the grounds of Steamtown National Historic Site. The museum building is in a former silk mill, and 9-mile round-trip excursions depart from the Steamtown excursion platform nearby.

Choices

Visitors of the Electric City Trolley Museum may opt to visit the museum, ride the trolley, or both. Inside the museum are several restored trolley cars, artifacts and photographs, a theater, and a children’s playroom. Trolley excursions operate along the former Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Railroad, a one-time interurban line that is now part of the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad. At the turnaround point, passengers can step off the car for a short tour of the museum’s restoration facilities.

When to go

The museum is open year-round with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Excursions typically operate Thursday to Sunday, May through October with special holiday runs in November and December.

Good to know

Scranton has a rich industrial history. In addition to Steamtown, the nearby Lackawanna County Coal Mine Tour takes visitors into a genuine anthracite coal mine, while the adjacent Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum showcases the area’s industrial heritage.

Worth doing

On select dates during the summer season, a combination ticket allows visitors to step off the trolley and enjoy a baseball game. The Scranton/Wilkes Barre Rail Riders AAA baseball stadium is located adjacent to the trolley restoration shop, and affords the unique opportunity for passengers to enjoy professional baseball and a vintage trolley ride.

Don’t miss

Be sure to check out Scranton Transit No. 324—one of only two existing Scranton streetcars—in the final stages of a multi-year restoration effort inside the Trolley Works.
