Colebrookdale Railroad logoThe Colebrookdale Railroad, once a branch line of the Reading Company, winds through deep woods along the Manatawny and Ironstone creeks. The 8.6-mile route, traveled on its 2-hour excursions, features high trestles and deep rock cuts.

Choices

On the Colebrookdale Railroad, both coach and first-class seating are available, and to take in the panoramic views, all passengers have access to the Secret Valley Explorer open observation car. Locomotive cab and caboose rides are also available with private charters and rentals for bigger events such as weddings. The railroad offers many themed rides, including autism-friendly, Sunday brunch, wine tasting, and murder mystery trains. Railbike excursions are also provided on the railroad, check the company’s website for more information and availability.

When to go

Excursions run Saturdays, Sundays, and select weekdays beginning in spring and running through December. Fall foliage can be enjoyed from the Hayrideon-Rails, and autumn evening mini-excursions include a bonfire with music, s’mores, and cider. Daytime Christmas trains include a stop at Santa’s Secret Forest, where passengers can select Christmas trees.

Good to know

Fine china, silver service, and white-jacketed waiters highlight the Garden Café car, whose décor is inspired by the garden scene in The Great Gatsby. Try the Pennsylvania Dutch Pot Pie.

Worth doing

The Boyertown Museum of Historic Vehicles is adjacent to the railroad’s station. Several rail museums and tourist railroads are within 45 minutes of the Colebrookdale. Also nearby are Valley Forge and Hopewell Furnace National Historic Sites.

Don’t miss

Along Milepost 6, look for the Devil’s Claw, one of the closest rock cuts on a railroad.
