BALTIMORE — No injuries have been reported after an explosion Thursday morning at a CSX coal silo in South Baltimore’s Curtis Bay. The facility sustained significant damage after the blast that residents reported feeling miles away.
The explosion occurred about 11:30 a.m. The Baltimore Sun reports the explosion occurred on a conveyer belt and resulted from a buildup of coal dust, according to a Baltimore City Fire Department spokesman. CSX spokeswoman Cindy Schild told the newspaper that all employees were accounted for and that cause is under investigation.
The Facebook page of the union representing Baltimore City firefighters reports the fire department responded with hazmat and special rescue units, as well as fireboats.
Nearby residents reported broken windows and other damage.
