The long rock wall is an important scenery feature on the HO scale Winter Hill Quarry Branch project model railroad. Now that the Hydrocal castings are in place, Model Railroader associate editor Cody Grivno will paint and weather the castings so that they look like real rocks. Cody uses a variety of techniques for the project. He’ll show you how to paint and weather the rocks using an airbrush, paint washes, and drybrushing.

  1. Great instructional video, Cody. I greatly enjoy your Code's Office series but all of the project videos are also excellent, this one especially. When I eventually start my layout, I think that the rocks will be the most fun. I'm modeling modern CSX in the DC Metro area (I live in Montgomery County) so I'll have to include a section out toward Cumberline to get some nice rock outcropping in!

  2. Cody, Are you using a special type of brush for your dry brushing? I cant get a brush to last very long when I do this.

  3. I love your rock approach Cody. The three colors are coming out great. Thanks for all the information.

  4. Great process teaching, Cody. And Steve, I really liked your segue to coming back after the paint dried!
    You guys, "rock!"
