Apply decals and finishing an N scale locomotive. Senior Editor Cody Grivno shares the final steps to decorating an Atlas EMD GP38-2 diesel locomotive model into Milwaukee, Racine & Troy model railroad colors. To close out the effort, his process starts by applying waterslide decals, adding weathering effects, and then re-assembling the unit for layout operation.

To learn more about the N scale (1:160) layout hosting Cody’s locomotive, read the January 2022 issue of Model Railroader magazine, or watch the State Line Route in N scale video series exclusively on Trains.com.

In this series, you’ll discover that the mid-sized stand-alone model railroad is inspired by the legendary HO scale (1:87.1) Milwaukee, Racine & Troy, a large-room layout built more than 20 years ago by Model Railroader staff and their friends.

The thrill from building your own model never gets old! But if you want to expand your N scale fleet the quickest way possible, you can acquire a wide variety of MR&T locomotives and rolling stock directly from the kalmbachhobbystore.com

  1. That’s why the modern decals tear when I am trying to move them around on a model. No sealer on the decal sheet. I have had so many decal failures I was going to stop trying to make my own models when I couldn’t find one ready made to buy.

  2. Great painting and decaling episode Cody. This reminds me why I’m an HO scale modeler, N scale is too small for my old eyes 🙂

  3. Nice model. Highly recommend, when able, Smokebox Graphics Sill Stripes. They are very clean, self adhesive and reflective. Patience is the key with decaling, adjust them, then let them lay in and let the solutions do the work.
