Midday Modeler 03.02.2022 — In this installment of Midday Modeler, David Popp gives a hearty update on the progress on the Jones Island portion of the MR&T HO scale layout along with Cody Grivno. Later in this Midday Modeler 03.02.2022 episode, David visits the Model Railroader workshop to talk with Classic Trains Editor Brian Schmidt and MR’s Steven Otte about their latest progress on their kitbash challenge projects.

Jones Island is the focus of MR staff work for the Rehab My Railroad series on Trains.com, and also a planned future series of articles in print.

The kitbash challenge this year features N scale and HO scale models from Walthers. The models are based on a Union Pacific depot prototype.

Midday Modeler is a new, regular video segment, recorded live and unscripted at Kalmbach Media beginning in February 2022.

The segment features Kalmbach Media staff modeling and talking about model railroads in a casual format. It is unscripted and broadcast live via Facebook on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Central time each week. Anyone who sees the video on Facebook can comment and ask questions, or just say “hi!”.

Shortly after the Facebook live stream, the video is taken down from Facebook and posted to Trains.com where it is available only to Model Railroader Video Plus members and Trains.com Unlimited Members.

  1. I agree with other comments regarding the sound. These old ears are having a lot of trouble understanding much of what is being said–to the extent that I just gave up. You need to use lapel mics or something like that.

  2. David,
I don’t know where your dual track depot is located, but you might have some luck using the google image search to find similar photos that sometimes provide additional information. Simply upload your image and let google do its thing.

    Cody,
Thanks for the ballast tutorial. I never thought of doing the center and edges separately. It, along with along with the dual layer edge approach, makes so much sense. As you described, I have ballast where the crust has broken and the loose ballast has spilled out. I’ll use your technique on an upcoming segment of my “Helper and Hobble Creek” Union Pacific alternate history railroad.

  3. To David Popp,

If you are looking for a 2 railroad served depot, then take a look at the depot that served Palmer MA (now a restaurant). That depot served the B&A and CV back in the day. There are lots of pictures of it during the days it was in use that are pretty easy to find with a google search. Enjoying this new series. Too bad I have to work when you are doing it live.

    Thanks!

    Rich

  4. A few years ago, I had problems with the “Arizona” ballast in HO scale (CSX I believe) being quite dusty. I had not noticed it until I started gluing down the ballast and the glue mixture ‘balled up’ with the dust and did not penetrate the ballast.
So, I called AZ Rock and spoke with the owner. He did not offer a solution, like “i’ll replace it, he just basically said “deal with it”!
I had purchased enough to finish ballasting the whole layout so I was stuck. I wound up putting about ½ cup of ballast in a bronze coffee filter and lightly tossing it while blowing across the top of the filter until I could see no more dust.
Worked fine after that BUT, I wasted about 2 hours going through all my ballast getting the dust off.
I agree, AZ Rock probably has the most variety of ballast out there but, had I known what I was up against, I would have gone with Scenics Express, which I used in some of the yards.
Hope they have the dust issue fixed!

  5. Seeing new people at Kalmbach in these videos! I still see that the sound is hit and miss. What is going on with the sound?

  6. Robert, how do you know what David would; or, would not do? I watch every single Video and like the help I get! However, I’m probably a “Hacker” compared to you! No nastiness intended, just responding to some heavy handed, poorly concaved, comments!
