Model Railroader editor Neil Besougloff builds a stable base for the Williams Bay depot on the Bay Junction HO scale model train layout. The depot is kitbashed from Walthers and Atlas parts. Neil will also use a piece of Woodland Scenics roadbed to simulate the depot’s asphalt parking lot. Associate editor Steve Otte shows you some of the decals that he’s made for various structures on the layout. Managing editor David Popp continues to lay track for the railroad.

  1. Williams Bay is taking shape Station and Town are in place now all that needs to be done is to pave the streets and parking lots and install the walls under the Turtle Creek Bridge

  2. I'd like to see an article/sidebar on how Steve Otte used Photoshop Elements to create the signs. for example what steps he took to get the signs drawn. Hopefully that will be part of your series when you get to that point in the project.

  3. i love the videoes. tons of information. been away from model railroading for 9 years now because of a traumatic brain injury. getting better control of my siezures that the brain injury caused. can't wait to get back to railroading again. keep up the good work.

  4. As per a previous posting I would love to see the process to create a weathered asphalt with the woodland scenics roadbed!

  5. This project triggered me to review a part of my model railroad. It is now under reconstruction to build it better and nicer.

  6. Hello Joel,

In answer to your question about Neil's station, you need to wait just a little longer for the article. It's scheduled to run in the May 2011 issue of MR, in Bay Junction part 5. And rest assured, at that point, Neil will tell all!

  7. Hello Rich,

Many of the Soo Line boxcars you saw were made as limited-edition models by Accurail for the Soo Line Historical society. I purchased them in 1999 or 2000, back when I had a Soo Line layout. Here's the link to the latest offerings from the group:

A few of the other cars were old Roundhouse models that I'd picked up at various hobby shops over the years. You may still see some of those at swap meets and such.

    Best wishes on your layout.

  8. Thanks a lot for your vid! I´m a MR and Garden Railways magazines fan and appreciate your work. Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentine and my wishes of a very good 2011 for all of you!

  9. Enjoyable so far. Will you be showing how you painted and weathered the Woodland Scenic roadbed material to get the look of asphalt. I'm using the same stuff on my N scale layout.

  10. I really like that kitbashed station Neil. Only thing that bothers me is the color. A beautiful Victorian station like that should have proper Victorian era colors to set it off. I'm sure your commuters would notice and appreciate it also!
Keep up the great work! You guys are the best in the business and hobby!!

  11. I don't when you while finish, but when you do it would be nice to burn them on disk and sale them to members. This way we will have the hold set at one time. It would sure would helpful when building are adding to our layouts. On second thought put in the magazine on line so we can down loiad it ourselves. Great series.

  12. I am enjoying the videos. I would enjoy them more if you would dispense with the identical 30 second intro for each video and just jump right into the "Hi! I'm David Popp and welcome to……" That 30 seconds could be put to much better use.

  13. Love the videos. The total access that Neil talks about at the end of the issue preview videos is very true. The video and the articles compliment each other very well. When do we get the next video? It's been over a week since the last one.

  14. Hi, Mike, Dennis, and James,

To make the decals for the Bay Junction project layout, I used Adobe Photoshop Elements to put together the collection of images I needed. For the United Cooperative and Corn Products signs I used Google Image Search to find the company logo, copied and pasted the logo into my Photoshop document, enlarged it to the size I needed, then used the program's drawing tools to trace it onto a new layer (because enlarging the original made it blurry). I copied the road signs from the Department of Transportation's Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (at http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov ) and altered the lettering with Photoshop's text tool. The others I created myself using Photoshop's drawing and text tools. I then printed them on our color laser printer using clear decal paper, which is available from Walthers, Microscale, Testors, and other vendors. If you don't have access to a color laser printer, Vitachrome Graphics makes white and clear decal paper made to work with inkjet printers. It's sold through Walthers. Thanks for watching, and happy railroading!

  15. Good information for even the experienced modeler. The main thing is never rush any project. Thanks for the video clip . Its just another part of this magazine that , for lack of a better word , makes a very useful tool.

  16. Guys, this is a nice feature to have, it adds so much more to the magazine, and gives a lot of great ideas.

  17. David, who produced the models of the all white 50' SOO LINE boxcars with the red doors? I've been looking for such a model recently. I do know that Kadee recently produced a boxcar like the one with black ends that's spotted at the background industry.

  18. Both MicroMark.com and Walthers.com offer ink-jet decal kits. Evans produces software for many signs; take plenty of digitals on trips and use these for signs also….
