A dry wash is a common scenic element in a desert landscape. Associate editor Steve Otte added this scenic element to the Model Railroader staff’s Eagle Mountain RR, as he describes in the June 2016 issue. In this video Steve describes scenicking the dry wash and building a Blair Line timber trestle for the main line.

  1. Fantastic! Can’t wait for the article.

I’m building a small layout based on an Australian prototype, more specifically V/LINE in Victoria and there are plenty of small wooden trestles crossing dry river beds. This is something I’ll definitely be incorporating into my layout.
    Thank you 🙂

  2. Steve Otte,
Nice job on the dry wash. I’m doing one on my free lance small layout in On30, but in more of a seasonal stream mode, since my layout is more in the Pacific Northwest mountain areas. Thanks, so much for adding a little humor that some of us more “seasoned” railroaders can appreciate.
One year in high school I busted up my knee so badly that I was at home for about 2 1/2 weeks recovering. I kept up on my school work, but otherwise, I was pretty immobile, so, besides reading, and perusing over back issues of Model Railroader, I spent some time watching daytime TV. It’s not really designed for active high-schoolers, but I, unfortunately, ended up memorizing nearly all the daytime TV game show themes and voices, and personalities! Yup, The Price is Right was among them. Bill Cullen was still hosting, then. Thanks for the quick quip at the end of the video. Ah, sweet memories! 🙂

  3. I really appreciate these video demonstrations of modeling scenery. The magazine articles and photos are good but to see “how” it is done is even better. Thanks!

  4. Great video Steve. Just enough information to spur interest in the article combined with good views of your scenery work. Your dry wash looks great.

  5. Camera work is getting much better. The insert shots let me see exactly what he was talking about. Just the way I would have done it back in m video days.

  6. I certainly echo the comments made so far. Excellent work! I will definitely be referring to this video and the article that was mentioned to do a similar scene on my future layout!

  7. Nicely done Steve. Your selection of HO scale sands and rocks and colors really captures the feel of the southwestern US. Thanks for the tip on paver sand.

  8. Nice scenery work!! Users can check out my review of the trestle dated July 30, 2015 in the Reviews portion of the menu. Search under structures reader reviews trestle. Looking forward to more info about the current project layout.

  9. Good job Steve……convincing dry wash scene and the gravel edges really define the flow channel as in the real scene. Thanks.
