Bob Spaulding built his S scale model railroad to host the greatest trains of American history. You can read all about his layout in the August 2015 issue of Model Railroader. This video shows model trains running through a few of the signature scenes on the 20 x 24-foot layout.

Nice layout, especially the bridge. This is the older, generic approach which no doubt still appeals to many.
