  1. Hi Gerry. I love your presentation style. You make this topic very approachable, I’m recently retired, and Looking to get started in model railroad publishing. I’m looking forward to using your series as a guide to get good photos on my 40″ x 60″ On30 layout. Thanks so much!

  2. Gerry, I always enjoy your MR Videos and I am especially looking forward to this current series. I prefer to make videos of my layout and my Christmas Garden and much of what you will be discussing is applicable to movies also. I really love your style! Keep up the great work.

  3. I’ve been taking photos for about 70 of my 83 years and I learned a couple of new things today. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

  4. You said it correctly, Gerry… take loads of photos. After a bit the correctness of imaging, lighting, composition etc. will become clear. Seems like an opportunity to offer a photo contest with different photographic subject areas, such as morning light, night operations, a busy yard, lonely tracks

  5. Thanks for comments, everyone! The “deeper dive” into the subject is coming up shortly, so stay tuned!

    Charlie: M&H Advertising was an ad agency I was an owner and Creative Director of in the ‘90s. We shut our doors in 2003.

    Greg and Rich: I get into “viewer perspective” in an upcoming episode.

  6. Just getting into doing some better shots of my layout. Turning 80 and never too late to learn a new aspect of the hobby. For me, the series is very timely. Looking forward to the series. Like your approach in providing guidance.

  7. Hi Gerry, I love your all your videos and the way to deliver and explain at a pace that makes the watcher feel your talking directly to them. Your photos are excellent and I had a question. What is the M and H Advertising sign story about that is on the wall? Keep em coming, 5?’s

  8. Thank you Gerry for introducing the readers to photography. Now 74, I started photography in high school taking photos for our monthly newspaper and year book. For all five of my college years I did the same. For one year after college I worked most weekends shooting weddings – both the ceremonies at the church and the receptions afterward for a photography studio. I agree with Greg Smith’s previous comment about shooting from a low angle. That is the view we are used to seeing. Your videos are always great!

  9. looking forward to these videos. We all take pictures of our work…. now we will learn how to make them look pictures.

  10. Thanks Gerry! I’m glad someone is addressing this subject finally. I think it is one of the most important parts of model railroading that get’s overlooked. A layout is like a movie set and if it’s not filmed right the movie can flop. Here is my big issue — take photos from a human viewpoint! All these photos from bird’s eye views are unrealistic and separate the viewer from reality. You have to shoot from the ground, or from a natural viewpoint. Much more realistic. Also, try to copy natural daylight as much as possible, which means making the shadows a major part of the scene. Keep it up!

  11. Gerry! Great video my man. We have a hobby that mixes well with so many other hobbies.
    Now to convince my college professor for credit in model railroading. Lol

  12. Excellent series!!! I’m definitely looking forward to more, especially editing photos on the computer.

  13. Gerry, I think this will be a wonderful series! I am really looking forward to more, especially on control of depth of field.

  14. Gerry once again you bring really good stuff to the table! I’ll be following along, but must be honest,, Cellphones kinda mess with me? , SLR-digital ? I’m still way back there with my Cannon FTB, and I just bet you know what that is, so some of us are still stuck in the 70’s, go slow.. I promise to try and keep up this time,, nice work..(;
