Senior Editor Cody Grivno reviews the new Atlas Trainman HO Electro-Motive Division (EMD) GP38-2 diesel locomotive. First, you’ll learn new insights about full-size EMD GP38-2 units, and specifics details about Helm Leasing no. 3805, which was originally built as Texas Mexican Railway no. 866.

Then, as possible only through video demonstration, Cody highlights the model’s key features, including a factory-applied snowplow, body-mounted Accumate knuckle couplers, plus plastic handrails and stanchions. The review sample includes an ESU LokSound Essential sound decoder, so Cody is keen to showcase the wide array of light and sound functions you can see and hear in a series of switching maneuvers!

This Atlas Model Railroad Co. HO scale (1:87.1) EMD GP38-2 diesel is now produced in Amtrak, BNSF Railway, Canadian National, Delaware & Hudson, Farm Rail, Helm, and Reading & Northern paint schemes, along with new road numbers for Conrail and Southern Pacific units. The DC models retail for $179.95, while the ESU LokSound versions are priced at $274.95.
