For many years Hobbyshop Window was a popular department in the pages of Model Railroader magazine. We’re excited to bring it back as an occasional feature on Trains.com. Here’s a recap of some of the items that arrived at our offices for the week ending February 27th 2026. HO scale Thrall high-side gondola with load. Paint schemes on this Athearn model include CP Rail, Fayette Power Project, Herzog, David J. Joseph Co. (Primed for Grime with scrap load), Northern Indiana Public Service, and Southwestern Electric Power. The HO scale model, offered in nine road numbers per scheme, has wire and plastic handrails, stirrup steps, and ladders; a factory-applied air reservoir, brake cylinder, and brake wheel; 100-ton trucks with 36” metal wheels; a removable plastic load (coal unless noted); and McHenry scale couplers. HO scale New Look Suburban “Fishbowl” bus. This model from Rapido Trains is available in a colorful assortment of paint schemes, including New York Bus Service, GO Transit (early and late), Golden Gate Transit, Grey Coach Lines, Greyhound, Metropolitan Provincial, NASA (Kennedy Space Center), Public Service Coordinated Transit (New Jersey), Rapido Trains Inc., and Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority. The HO scale suburban bus, also available painted white but unlettered, has a full interior with separate high-back seats and grooved flooring; positionable front wheels; etched-metal interior stanchions; stamped-metal handrails; separate farebox; and working headlights, taillights, and interior lights (requires 9-12 volt power supply, not included). HO scale Denver & Rio Grande Western steel riveted caboose. Rapido Trains offers this newly-tooled model in the following D&RGW paint schemes: As-built (black), switch caboose scheme, early modifications (black), postwar modifications (black, Aspen Gold and silver with single black stripe, and Aspen Gold), and late modifications (Aspen Gold). The HO scale model, available in two to four road numbers per scheme, features see-through, etched-metal steps and walkways; a detailed, illuminated interior; end detail, including uncoupling levers; factory-installed grab irons; Barber-Bettendorf trucks (solid- or roller-bearing, as appropriate); a detailed underbody with separate air and brake piping; and metal couplers. Modeler-installed details include etched-metal road numbers, Automatic Car Identification placards, and a vent stack. The D&RGW steel riveted caboose is priced at $129.95. N scale Gunderson cryogenic reefer. Road names on this Atlas model include Cryo-Trans (as-delivered, Cornerstone Systems, and ex-Lamb Weston), GATX Arcticar, JR Simplot, and Lamb Weston. The N scale model, which uses former Wm. K. Walthers Inc. tooling, is also available undecorated. The Master Line model has body-mounted couplers and features an improved brake wheel, stirrup steps, and crossover platforms. HO scale Wabash streamlined caboose. Wabash (red-and-white and Mineral Red schemes); Ann Arbor (red and red with yellow ends); Detroit, Toledo & Ironton (red and black); and Norfolk & Western (blue and American Revolution Bicentennial schemes) are the road names on this WalthersProto model. The HO scale caboose is offered with prototype-specific features, including a Murphy or diagonal-panel roof, rounded- or square-window end doors, and as-built or modernized smokejacks. In addition, the model has a detailed interior, see-through running boards, and Proto-Max metal couplers. The Wabash streamlined caboose sells for $79.98. Wm. K.
