Athearn recently released an F89-F TOFC flatcar in its Genesis line. The flatcar is based on a prototype built in the 1960s by Bethlehem Steel Co. at its plant in Johnstown, Pa.
The Athearn Genesis F89-F TOFC flatcar features plastic and die-cast metal construction. The N scale model has newly tooled uncoupling levers and rubber train line hoses, raised and lowered trailer hitches, a factory-installed brake ratchet, and wire grab irons. Additional features include screw-mounted 70-ton roller-bearing trucks, machined metal RP-25 contour wheelsets, and body-mounted McHenry scale couplers. The model has a minimum radius of 9-3/4” and a recommended radius of 12+”.
Details on the newly tooled, injection-molded plastic 45-foot Fruehauf Z-Van trailer include a factory-applied wire landing gear crank, wheeled or shoe-style landing gear as appropriate, two- and four-latch rear doors, positionable bogies, and mud flaps. Paint schemes include Burlington Northern, Clipper Exxpress, Transamerica Distribution Services, and XTRA.
Road names on the Athearn N scale F89-F TOFC flatcar include Kansas City Southern, Southern Pacific, and Trailer Train (brown and yellow schemes). Models without trailer loads are offered in two road numbers each; versions with a trailer load are available in one number.
The Athearn Genesis N scale F89-F TOFC flatcar is priced at $43.99 (without trailer) and $69.99 (with). The Fruehauf 45-foot Z-Van trailers are also offered individually in different numbers.
