Open houses, whether at model railroad clubs or private home layouts, offer fantastic opportunities to connect with fellow modelers and share the hobby. It’s also a joy to see what makes a layout tick and how one differs from another. While hosting an open house requires careful planning — as Arlan Tietel thoroughly explains in his article on how to host an open house — there’s also an etiquette for visitors to follow. A great experience is a two-way street, after all!
Show Respect
Being respectful to your hosts and their layout is simple common sense. Don’t touch the layout or trains unless given permission. The same goes for asking permission before taking any photos. Be kind and courteous, and always thank your hosts for their hospitality.
Extend that same respect to your fellow guests, especially when navigating tight spaces (more on this soon). Also, be mindful of both public and private property, particularly when dealing with the everyday challenge of finding parking. If you’re attending with a group, especially younger visitors, leading by example will ensure everyone shows proper respect too.
Dress Smartly
“Dress to impress” doesn’t mean a tuxedo! Casual but presentable attire, like a clean shirt and pants, is perfect. Indoor layouts usually have adjusted room temperatures, so dress in layers as needed. Personally, I prefer a short-sleeve shirt instead of long-sleeve, regardless of the season (though I’ll still have a jacket for cold weather outside). Short sleeves also reduce the chance of catching on parts of the layout or trains, which is helpful when moving through those tight spaces. You’ll probably want to leave backpacks or other bags in your car, as well.
Be Mindful of your Surroundings
As mentioned, you’ll likely be sharing and navigating tight spaces, especially if the layout room isn’t designed for large crowds. When moving around the layout, always go slowly. Get a feel for your surroundings as you move from one scene to the next: How many people are around? How condensed is the space? Are there delicate parts of the layout you need to avoid damaging?
Pick the Brains
Most hosts are an open book and will gladly discuss their layout and talk about the hobby in general. Don’t be shy about asking questions! This is a great opportunity to network, and you might even make a new friend or two.
Have an open mind
There’s no single “right way” to build a model railroad. Craftsmanship and skill sets vary among modelers, and open houses beautifully showcase this diversity, offering plenty of inspiration. Approach your visit with an open mind. Fully immerse yourself in understanding the “how” and “why” behind the layout’s construction and operation. You might leave with a broader perspective and think, “Hey, I should try that on my layout!”
I’ve hosted many open houses over the years. I always enjoy the courteous (and curious) visitors.
