C&NW 1507, a late-1940s Baldwin DRS-6-6-15 that was repowered with an EMD engine (note the Geep-style long hood), works on the road’s industrial line along the Fox River at Combined Locks, Wis., in late fall 1973.

At Escanaba, Mich., the tug Olive L. Moore stands in the foreground as a bulk carrier is loaded with taconite at the North Western’s ore pier in late summer 1973. The ore boat is the American Steamship Co.’s 680-foot Charles E. Wilson, launched earlier in the year.

Westbound freight 295, powered by a mix of EMD and Fairbanks-Morse diesels, has a clear signal at Kaukauna, Wis., in July 1973. A yard job worked by re-engined Baldwin 1488, one of 13 acquired from the Katy earlier in the year, stands in the clear.

C&NW’s Lake Shore Division was a haven for minority-make diesels. In late winter 1970, two Fairbanks-Morse H10-44 switchers and two re-powered Baldwin DRS-6-6-15s stand at Appleton, Wis.

A Milwaukee Road H16-66 idles near the disused coaling tower at Stambaugh (Iron River), Mich., in June 1973. C&NW and MILW pooled locomotives and cars in ore service in this area. Burger was touring the territory in a Chrysler hi-rail sedan with Superintendent O. Z. “Ozzie” Brooks (at right in photo).
