Alco RSD5 572 leads the Milwaukee Road’s local freight to Sparta and Viroqua, Wisconsin, out of La Crosse in October 1971. At right is Grand Crossing tower, guardian of a tangle of tracks that includes the Chicago–Twin Cities main lines of MILW and Burlington Northern.

MILW’s Alco RSD5 #572 road switcher, which was 18 years old when the photo above was taken, is five years away from retirement.
Note that the former Grand Crossing Tower (built in 1928 to replace the original structure, which was destroyed in a train wreck), now resides at Copeland Park northeast of the Amtrak station in La Crosse, WI. The non-profit “4000 Foundation” provides upkeep to the exhibit.
