Nickel Plate 779 was not only the final member of that road’s notable family of Berkshires, it was also the last steam locomotive built by the Lima Locomotive Works. This fact was not known until some time after its May 13, 1949, completion, and Lima did not make an official photo of her. Instead, the builder later altered this image of NKP 776 to represent 779. End of the Lima line

Let’s add that when time came to retire (after only 9 years of service in 1958), the beautiful NKP 2-8-4 #779 was donated to the City of Lima and was placed on display in the Lincoln Park Train Exhibit in 1966, where it remains to this day… Created by the LLW, Berkshires were among the last great steam locomotive designs. The Nickel Plate Road was especially known for its fleet of these “Superpower” 2-8-4 steamers.
