Enjoy this exclusive video tour of John Mueller’s C&NW-themed HO scale (1:87) layout inspired by railroad operations and locations in northern Wisconsin. Follow the action along the line, and then look for additional coverage of the layout in a forthcoming issue of Model Railroader magazine.

  1. I bet that restaurant serves great pasties, maybe a Friday evening fish fry, and smelt in the spring. This could easily be set in the UP and parts of Minnesota. Great job capturing the feel of the location without modeling exactly, I really enjoyed it.

  2. Excellent work! I could watch trains running on your layout all day. Congratulations on such an accomplishment. Looking forward to seeing another video with some operations and switching!

  3. Nice layout and tour. Would love to see a video when you get into railroad operations and see how that works as well.

  4. Mr. Mueller, thank you for sharing your layout. What a magnificent piece of work! It gives me great inspiration for my future railroad. Dr. Pendyke from Mayberry swears by Miracle Salve!

  5. Very nice layout. Structures fit nicely into the scenes, with good weathering and just enough detail. Should have some good in the future operating scenarios. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Very impressed with your layout John. Really catches the flavor of the era, territory and C&NW. Cool lily pads!

  7. Very well done!?? I enjoyed your tour, thanks for sharing your layout!

  8. John, you have done an outstanding job. The structures and scenery are all very convincing, and the trains seem to run beautifully. Great detailing to boot.

  9. Great layout John. I especially liked the use of stop logs in the gondolas to hold the pulpwood and the scene of you and your brother knee deep in the stream is priceless. Great scenery and buildings. Conoco and Blatz bring back many memories of that era. Very nice, thanks for sharing.

  10. Impressed by your structures and scenery detailing! I really liked how you combined multiple kits to create the Farmer’s Co-op in Woodlander. And the black & white posts lining the highways and half-buried white tires lining a business lot transported me back to the 50’s.

  11. John, this is a beautiful layout. Northern Wisconsin is not often modeled. Your railroad makes it look like a great place to watch trains. Thanks

  12. Very nicely done. It really captors the look and feel of Northern Wisconsin or the Northwoods. I particularly liked the single stall roundhouse in Woodlander(to protect the name of the innocent) as it captors the look of the prototype albeit with fewer stalls. The prototype stills stands but for how long is anyone’s guess. Great job
