Inspired by a recent Drew’s Trackside Adventures, MRVP’s David Popp aimed to design a layout that highlights the amazing scenery and railroad operation found in Canada’s Thompson and Fraser River Canyons. Ben Lake takes that scheme even further with this 3D rendering of David’s 5 x 7-foot track plan, complete with a helix, for an N scale (1:160) model railroad.

  1. I’m very pleased to see an N scale plan which really exploits what I see as one of the most important advantages of N scale, i.e., spectacular scenery in a small space. If scenery is a big motivating factor for you, then N scale is the scale for you.

  2. we seem to be HO loaded and except for this N scale mighty lite as far I see and I model N exclusively mainly for more track in less space , this because I used to run HO many moons ago
untill I saw my first n scale loco ! be well and stay safe every one !

  3. Greetings all, just want to know what program did you use to make that 3-D model. Is the program on the open market or is this something that you created.

  4. Great layout plan! Just wondering when the PDF will be available online, and will it include a PDF for the benchwork also? Thanks!

  5. Will there be a Track Plan pdf in the Track Plan Database?
Some of the features of this layout are very interesting! Nice work on the framing, I am looking forward to see how the rest of this layout fits together and incorporating ideas into my next layout.

    Thanks!

  6. Maybe it is just me but exactly where do we find the link to the MR Workshop Webcams? Searched all over as I am sure Thomas Hutchinson and others have do too……

  7. WOW love it! You guys have really stepped up, just when I needed motivation to for a new layout! Got my juice flowing for a great layout! And have my kids help and enjoy the best hobby ever!

  8. Loved your facinating CAD of the N-scale layout. Shows some novel approaches to small space RR’g, and ideas readily adaptable to others. Keep up the great work and innovating thinking.

  9. Hey Tim and others. Check out the MR Workshop webcam. The layout is under construction now, and you can watch it take shape over the next several months. The video series on MRVP will begin in mid-January, so there isn’t much longer to wait!

  10. Sure has been a long 4 months since the original video was posted! For those looking for a Canadian Canyons fix, head over to the MR Project Cam where you can watch the progress. Also some good comments concerning the project including a fairly recent project update by MR Associate Editor Eric White – including a rough timetable for the MRV features AND the companion story in MR.

  11. Awesome, small 5′ x 7′ n scale layout. I prefer layouts with less tunnels hiding the trains like the n scale layout of MRs own David Popp. I look forward to seeing the progress on this worthy n scale layout.

  12. I love the concept and the 3D model of this layout. It takes a lot to spark my interest in a layout design but this one really did things to capture my imagination. The staging access and helix are so cleverly built into the whole of the top storey. I admire the person who put so much thought into it. Which MR issue will have the 2D plan and the first article on this one?

  13. Just thinking that Kent’s mountain scenery technique on the N scale track module series might work nicely on this layout for those steep cliffs shown on the 3D model. Thanks.

  14. While I always love the project railroad series, this layout plan in the same footprint could have been an very interesting Z scale project railroad to show how far Z has come in the last five years and really captured the grandeur and scale.

  15. Nice to see a plan without any right angles! I came up with a similar solution for my like-sized n scale layout; a lower level multi-track staging loop connected to the main level via a helix. Alas, I don’t have the space for such expansive curves and had to limit the helix to a single track at 12″ radius. Well done.

  16. Great layout concept by the MR crew, and the “out of the box” David Popp track plan is crazy cool. After watching the spectacular scenery on the CP’s Thompson and Fraser River Canyons from Drew’s Trackside Adventures, I can’t wait to see this project railroad come together. This looks like its going to be one unique (maybe even spectacular itself?) model railroad!
