Illinois Central’s first streamliner, delivered in 1936, was the Green Diamond, a fully articulated aluminum train built by Pullman-Standard and powered by Electro-Motive with a Winton diesel engine. It is pictured at 47th Street, Chicago, near the end of its regular run from St. Louis. Philip Korst Jr. photo

  1. Remember that IC’s Green Diamond operated from 1936 until 1968. Initially it operated with IC #121, the last of the 1930s fixed-consist articulated streamliners built in the United States. After 1947, the Green Diamond operated with more conventional streamlined equipment until its discontinuance. Unfortunately, the original trainset was not preserved.
