ScaleTrains HO scale EMD SD38-2 diesel locomotive

The ScaleTrains Electro-Motive Division SD38-2 HO scale (1:87.1) diesel locomotive is featured in this latest product review video from Model Railroader magazine. Senior Editor Cody Grivno reviews the unit, which is part of the manufacturer’s Rivet Counter line.

The reviewed model is decorated as GATX no. 1245. This 2,000-horsepower unit has a rich history, originally built in 1978 for Reserve Mining. It later served Burlington Northern and Iowa Interstate, where it was renumbered as unit no. 153 and remains in service today.

Key features include factory-installed m.u. hoses, an 88-inch low short hood, and Pyle-National gyralites. The sample features an ESU LokSound V5 sound decoder, which controls light effects and sound functions, including engine startup and the air horn. Direct-current models retail for $199.99, while sound-equipped versions are priced at $324.99.
