Midday Modeler — 06.08.2022. This week Cody Grivno and Eric White host our weekly Midday Modeler video from the MR&T model train layout in the heart of Kalmbach Media in Waukesha, Wis.

This week, Eric takes you behind the scenes for what happens in a during a product review video. Cody shows us around the Milwaukee, Racine & Troy model train layout and answers viewer questions.

Midday Modeler is a new, regular video segment, recorded live and unscripted at Kalmbach Media beginning in February 2022.

The segment features Kalmbach Media staff modeling and talking about model railroads in a casual format. It is unscripted and broadcast live via Facebook on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Central time each week. Anyone who sees the video on Facebook can comment and ask questions, or just say “hi!”

Shortly after the Facebook live stream, the Midday Modeler — 06.08.2022 video is taken down from Facebook and posted to Trains.com where it is available only to Model Railroader Video Plus members and Trains.com Unlimited Members.

  1. I watch this series every week on Trains.com and I typically really enjoy it. This episode was not up to par. The video was very pixelated from start to finish. There’s also no need for a 20 minute lead-in.

  2. A viewer asked a question regarding catenary wiring and the possibility of installing any on the layout, a club I recently visited in Santa Clara, CA, the South Bay Railroad Historical Society has excellent HO and N scale layouts in the historical Southern Pacific Santa Clara Depot. They have a small traction portion of the HO scale layout where member’s trolleys and motors can operate. When I was there, a couple of members were working on firming up the power leads.

  3. I agree with Nealy. While the video quality was low today, that’s not usually the case and might have been a one-off. However, the Midday Modeler audio is consistently uneven due to the mic only being at the camera. Maybe a boom mic would help? That could be tricky in tight spaces but would be quicker than putting a mic on each participant. This problem will likely be worse in an outdoor situation (eg Kent’s garden railroad). I do enjoy the series regardless!

    Cody,
The McDonalds toy you mentioned with the square people was a Playskool toy. Not too be confused with the Fisher-Price barn that others were referencing ?

  4. It is very hard to hear what you are saying unless you are right in front of the camera have you concidered using microphones. some of you talk very softly like you are in a meeting and as such the camera mic is not pickng you up or you are to far from the mic or other background noise like engines running drawn your voice out.

Other wise I enjopy the program

  5. Poor video quality, pixelated. The video was also shakey. There is something called a “steady cam” that you need to get.
