Q: In a recent Garden Railways e-mail there were 1:24 and 1:25 scale rules pictured. Are these available and from whom? –tinksdaddy, via email

Many manufacturers of larger-scale rules have come and gone over the past 10 years. These rules, made by C.T.T. Inc., are no longer being produced. See the list in this article for other options. Photo by Kent Johnson

A: Scale rules for garden railways: Ten years ago, there were many manufacturers offering scale rulers – frequently referred to as rules – in a variety of the larger scales. Unfortunately, there are far fewer options today, but you still have a handful of choices. I will list them at the end of this response, with a link to the manufacturer.

I also consulted with Tim Kidwell, editor of Kalmbach Media’s Finescale Modeler. He suggests using an architect’s scale. These triangle-shaped rules have conversions for 6 to 12 different scales, including 1:24 and 1:32. Find these at office supply stores, art supply stores, and many places online.
