Light rail commuter service has arrived in the state of North Carolina. The Charlotte Area Transit System, or CATS, was formed in 1999, and initiated rail service with the Lynx Blue Line in 2007. This line now stretches 19 miles between the UNC Charlotte campus on the north side of town, and a station near Pineville adjacent to the I-485 southern beltway. In addition, a second line, the Gold Line, operates a modern streetcar service over a four-mile segment downtown. Maintenance for both sets of light rail vehicles are done at a dedicated service center called South Yard. Come with us as we explore the Lynx system, including a behind-the-scenes tour of the South Yard maintenance facility.
