Trains Live – Mid-Continent Railway Museum (Part 1) Duluth

Trains LIVE — 10-26-2022 — The name Pullman became synonymous with railroad sleeping cars to the point that we often forget that other companies made such cars as well. The folks at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum in North Freedom, Wis., have not forgotten this fact. In their collection is the Barney and Smith Car Co., wood-body sleeping car Duluth. The car dates to 1902, and is believed to be the oldest sleeping car in its original configuration. It ran on the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railway between Duluth, Minn., and Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., until 1934. Currently, the Duluth is undergoing an amazing restoration. Come along as Trains Live explores the Duluth.

In this episode we visit with Bill Buhrmaster, who is leading the volunteer team working on the Duluth, will show us how the restoration is progressing. To date, Bill and the Mid-Continent restoration team have devoted over 3,500 hours to the project. Their care and craftsmanship show through in the work already done on the car. We will also see how an HO-scale model has helped in the restoration process.

Join us for a look at a work in progress that will return a historic rail vehicle to its original glorious state.
