The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway was formed in 1972. Operating out of the town of Nelsonville, Ohio, with a former Lake Superior & Ishpeming 2-8-0. Most days, diesels handle the primary schedule along with special steam excursions with former Ohio Power Company No. 3, a Baldwin 0-6-0. Trains operate from Nelsonville, Ohio, north to both Haydenville, Ohio, and a longer trip to East Logan, Ohio, a distance of about 12 miles.
We just rode HVSR’s steam excursion on 4 November. There were 9 or 10 full passenger and covered gondola cars. The trip was very scenic due to many leaves’ falling already, thus opening up scenic vistas
throughout the trip. Our conductor, John Parks, was very friendly and informative; our talks with him were really enjoyable. Our 0-6-0 steam engine had plenty of power, and we were able to get many good photos of this restored
locomotive. We ate lunch afterward at Millstone Barbecue in Logan, just one of many fine restaurants in this
tourist friendly and scenic Hocking Hills region. What a great way to spend a glorious autumn Saturday!
