Welcome to Summer Camp 2023 Day Four. Today is an odds and ends kind of day, because we have all sorts of things to advance to the next level. Campers will get involved in detailing work, constructing part of the truck before painting the subassemblies, plus starting to paint the Sculptamold once that’s dry.

  1. David, Would a real steam loco have a sheet of metal across the back like yours, making it difficult for the fire man to get to the tender?

  2. David, great timing! I’ve been working on a on30 mogul, detailing it as a stand in for a SP narrow gauge 4-6-0. I was thinking of using some sort of tape to attach the deck plate or apron between the tender and locomotive. I was concerned that it might be a bit too much of a “quick and dirty” fix, but based on your project it should be fine. Thanks !

  3. So far for my summer camp project, I’ve ballasted several spurs, taken a hike in the forest (built and installed some trees), planted a cotton field, and did a service project fixing a porch railing on one of the company houses in town. Wonder what tomorrow will bring?

Oh, and for a real bit of railroad summer camp fund, Philmont Scout Ranch has a section of railroad their restoring a bit at a time the Scouts can work on. My son got to lay some rail and ride a handcar on his trip a couple years ago.
