After touching up the highway texture and color, Gerry Leone takes the construction off road! In this episode, he works to install abutments and wing walls along the underpass, before building out the adjacent scenery base. Off course, Gerry makes the best laid plans, and then promptly calls an audible. Follow along to see how he weaves foamboard, Woodland Scenic Shaper Sheet, plaster cloth, Hydrocal, plus other scenery staples into a rigid landform!

Going off road to build a scenery base
Gerry – do you have information about how you constructed your miniature paint booth seen in this episode? It looks like the perfect size for small workshop.
This season, I decided to try to watch the videos in order. Really helps!
I first tried to use cardboard strips and lay over with paper like the old masters did. Well when your old and balance isn’t the best. I found having foam under the larger areas was a lot more stable when you lose your balance and your hand goes through the scenery! Did try one new product in one area. Had a large (3’x4’x8-12″) open space and used some stuff for fence posts outdoors. It is a foam that you mix in the bag and you have 30 or so seconds to open the bag and pour it in place. It worked great. For a couple small spaces I used the spray form and it too worked great for the purpose. Now all the spaces are strong enough to hold up and provide an area to keep your balance. Great for planting trees now too!
Nice to watch before I tackle a few areas on my layout. It’s easy to forget how to do stuff like this if you haven’t in a while. Thanks for showing your mistakes as well as your work. It really, really helps. I would have tried some of the things you did… that didn’t work well. So, thanks for that!
David — Another viewer mentioned that I wouldn’t have had the Vaseline problem if I’d have used 1/4” or 1/8” square styrene rods. He’s right. The concrete wouldn’t have stuck to the styrene. So there’s a tip for you!
