Host Gerry Leone is making great inroads on his new roadway construction! In this episode, he’s all set to pave and finish the highway route defined in the debut of this relaunched exclusive Trains.com Video modeling series. But while he waits for the concrete roads to cure, Gerry shares his progress on a few other road-adjacent projects too. And true to form, you’ll also see how the roadway addition forced our host to take a bit of a detour in his efforts to finish the fascia!
To glean even more fascia construction insights from our masterful model railroader, be sure to watch Back on Track, Episode 13 – exclusively on Trains.com Video!
Great video! I personally use Durabond 45 by USG. I add color to the Durabond which offers me a concrete color either darker or lighter. The Durabond 45 dries in a few hours, depending on thickness. i have been using the Durabond by USG for approximately 20 years. Since it is a joint compound, it also is used for patching wallboard, so it has many uses! It is not very expensive for a 25 pound bag. I also use the Durabond 45 for scenery and adding a brown color to represent soil or dirt, so one bag will go far. It can be mixed to whatever consistency that is desired for the projects. The Durabond 45 dries in 45 minutes when using it on drywall. It is also available in Durabond 90 for a longer drying time.
Then I use a Sharpie thin marker to draw lines to represent asphalt joint sealing and pavement cracks. I also use a knife to line out the pavement patches and paint those a flat black. The thin Sharpie lines can also represent the cracks from those road patches.
Great idea, Barry. I’ll have to try that next time!
Another great video Gerry. Many thanks. Might it have been easier to use strip styrene as forms for your highway, rather than basswood?
Jeff — I mentioned to Artie (below) that the idea of strip styrene is a great one, so you and Artie both had the same brilliant thought. Not only would the cement probably not have stuck to the styrene, when I was finished I’d have a bunch of nice strip styrene to use…unlike the basswood sticks which were totally destroyed.
Where is Part 1?

Oh no – another “Tortoise by Circuitron” – I laughed so hard I had to reach for a Kleenex – by Kimberly-Clark.
But seriously, really enjoy this new series – again very informative as usual.
Does/would the Vinyl Cement Patch stick to styrene – was thinking rather than basswood strips might try some 1/8″ high thin styrene strips as the edging when making a road
Artie
Now you’ve got ME laughing, Artie!
I totally forgot to mention (probably because I was still laughing) — the idea of styrene strips is a great one and I wish I’d thought of it. Next time!
Gerry,
When you make your videos, does the Model Railroader Crew need to drive all the way from Milwaukee to your place? Or, do you handle all of it and they edit it?
Mark — take a look at the credits at the end of the episodes. I do mostly everything from shooting to editing, and the Waukesha crew cleans up my edits and makes it all look pretty with the titles on the beginning and end.
