In this helpful, introductory effort, David Popp shares simple and easy techniques for adding a scene-extending background/view block to a model railroad. While the planning and painting steps are all demonstrated on his N scale (1:160) T-Trak module, David’s explanations and efforts can certainly be applied to other layouts or displays of any scale!

  1. This is a good primer on the basics of painting a skyboard.

    I don’t agree with David’s explanation of why the sky is blue. The sky does not reflect the color of the oceans. Pure water is colorless and the oceans and lakes reflect the color of the sky, albeit darker than the sky. The sky is blue because of an effect call light scattering. Microscopic dust particles in the air causes the shorter wavelength blue sunlight to scatter in all directions, which illuminates the sky with blue light. The microscopic particles do not scatter the longer wavelength red sunlight. At sunset, sunlight travels a longer distance through the atmosphere and scatters even more short wavelength light, which is why the sun is red at sunset.
