In this episode, David Popp continues working on the barn and surrounding farm scene on his Olympia & Sand Creek On30 display layout. Efforts include fabricating and installing a new, detailed barn door, extending and amending the barn’s roof, and even taking time to audit the height, shape, fit, and finish of his background trees! Be sure to explore the entire Olympia series, appearing exclusively on Trains.com Video!
David, I love the video and have been watching the series ever since Olympia 1. But I may have misunderstood you when you mentioned the pine tree manufacturer – I thought you said Timberline Scenery, but a search of Walthers.com shows only out of stock/discontinued items. A web search likewise turns up nothing for Timberline Scenery. There used to be a company of that name in Morrison, CO, but to the best of my knowledge, they’ve been out of business for almost ten years now.
Sorry, Richard. I was unaware Timberline was gone. I’d been hoarding some of those trees for years. Our local hobby shop had them, and when I could afford a set, I’d buy them up and put them away. I got a few more when we took down the MR&T last summer, so that’s where they came from. Perhaps you can still find a few on eBay.
Great video David, the Olympia & Sand Creek now comes to life.
But one remark on the barn doors:
The best way putting in crossbraces is from the lower hinge to the upper outside corner of the door.
I look forward seeing more of this beautiful layout.
Kind regards from Germany.
Jay Keith
Thanks for watching us in Germany, Jay! I had no idea that the cross bracing on barn doors actually had a specific direction, but now that you said it, the lateral forces on the door would be better dissipated if pushed to the bottom hinge sides by the braces. If I can get the doors unglued, I’ll flip them around.
Very nicely done. Trees, buildings, backdrop, other scenery details. Perfect time for a short operations segment with an engine bringing in a few cars to swap with some already there. A quick switch from “model” to “railroad” as a break, then back to scenery. Possible?
Hi Roger. Great idea. Bryson comes over regularly to run the layout with me. Unfortunately, you’re going to need to wait a bit for that segment, as I’ve already filmed through episode 28. Look for some operating fun later this summer.
David, excellent work as usual. Words cannot express my gratitude to you for all of the things I have learned from you over the years. FYI, the original Olympia and its subsequent expansions were the inspiration for my On30 layout (still a work in progress). Thanks again for all of your hard work and the hours of informative entertainment you have provided.
Hello Manfred. Thanks for the note and the kind words. Take some pictures of your layout and email them to me. We run a series on Trains.com called “built by others”, and we may be able to use your work. popp@firecrown.com
Looking great! I am hoping when this section is fully done you will have a segment with an operating session on the whole layout,
Hi Scott! Yes, the final episode of this series will be a full operating session on the layout. We’re just starting to work out how the operating scheme for the railroad will change with the Sand Creek addition. Look for that late in 2025 or early 2026.
