Host David Popp shows viewers how to build realistic scenery around the high embankments of the HO scale (1:87.1) East Troy Industrial Park project layout. In this instructional video, you’ll learn how to use foam board, packing peanuts, and plaster cloth to create a durable base for additional ground cover and fine scenery materials. It also offers tips on preparing the layout and protecting your track and backdrop when working with plaster.
Be sure to keep up with the construction progress by linking into the Trains.com Workshop Webcam (available 24/7), and the full series of helpful, instructional videos rolling out every month until the effort concludes. Even then, the fun will continue in frequent Trains.com articles/updates and Model Railroader print features, beginning with the January 2026 issue. You won’t want to miss the Expert Tips and Techniques the crew will share with you along the way, as they have a bit of fun bringing the ETIP into fruition!
Another approach I have used when there are odd shapes and curves is making paper templates over the area and cutting the plaster cloth to the templates (watching to much Gerry Leone). I number the templates and the cut pieces to lay them in proper order. To make cutting easier I use the 8″ wide roll of plaster cloth and use 8″ wide pieces of paper (8.5 by 11 pieces cut to 8 by 11).
Now that the scenery is in it is time to seal it. Break out the plaster and the plaster cloth the scene is about to go white.
Looking great David, it reminds of Winter Hill. I’m looking forward to the next installment on this project layout. It’s also giving me a lot of ideas for my O scale 2 rail Beaver Creek layout. This track plan would be perfect for my layout, I have all my benchwork installed. I’m still in the design phase on the track plan.
