Broadway Limited Imports HO scale EMD SD40 decorated in Southern Ry.’s “tuxedo” scheme paid a visit to our Wisconsin & Southern staff layout. Join Model Railroader editor Eric White and senior editor Cody Grivno as they talk about the features on the six-axle road locomotive and run a train on MR’s WSOR staff layout.

In addition to Southern Ry., Broadway Limited Imports offers the SD40 lettered for Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe; Chesapeake & Ohio; Canadian National; Canadian Pacific; Conrail; CSX; Pennsylvania RR; Southern Pacific; and Union Pacific. Each paint scheme is offered in two road numbers; and undecorated model with C&O details is also available.

Features on the Broadway Limited Imports HO scale EMD SD40 include an ABS body, die-cast metal chassis, railroad-specific details (low or high short hood, truck sideframes, step wells, pilots, fuel tank, and antenna type and location, among other items), wire grab irons, Kadee-compatible metal couplers, and a factory-installed and painted engineer figure. The model, which has a minimum operating radius of 18”, will operate on code 70, 83, and 100 rail.

The SD40, priced at $399.99, has a dual-mode Paragon4 sound decoder featuring Rolling Thunder, back-electromotive-force control, a built-in capacitor pack, individually controllable lights, and all-wheel electrical pickup.

  1. The “standard” decoder key for sound on/off or loco start/stop is F8. Why does BLI use F9? Just to be different? Noted that coupler heights between the loco and Southern boxcar were different. Which is at the correct height – loco or car?
Can shorter couplers be easily installed?
