FORT WORTH, Texas — Fort Worth-area transit agency Trinity Metro has approved a 10-year extension of a contract with operating company Herzog Transit Services Inc. for its two commuter rail operations, the TEXRail line between Fort Worth and DFW International Airport and the Trinity Railway Express between Fort Worth and Dallas.
Trinity Metro’s board approved the contract for about $324 million at a June 16 meeting, according to the news site Fort Worth Report. That includes about $224 million for operations and about $100 million for fuel. The agreement includes a 3% escalation cause to cover rising expenses and is capped at a maximum of $465 million, and does not include capital expenditures such as new railcars.
TEXRail offers half-hourly service on the 27-mile, nine-station between the airport and downtown Fort Worth, and carried more than 809,000 riders in 2024 — a an increase of more than 13% over the previous year, according to statistics from the American Public Transportation Association. The operation uses Stadler FLIRT diesel multiple-unit trainsets. Trinity Railway Express, operated jointly with Dallas Area Rapid Transit, operates locomotive-hauled bilevel trainsets on a 34-mile, 10-station route. It carried more than 1.25 million riders in 2024, an 8.8% increase over 2023.
