ORANGE, Calif. — Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner will add a 13th daily Los Angeles-San Diego round trip on Jan. 26, restoring operation to pre-pandemic levels, the LOSSAN Corridor Agency announced today (Jan. 13, 2026).
Added will be a 7:01 a.m. departure from San Diego, arriving at LA Union Station at 9:57 a.m., and a 7:10 p.m. departure from LA, arriving in San Diego at 10:07 p.m. The new schedule is available here.
“Adding the 13th round trip between Los Angeles and San Diego marks a significant milestone in fully restoring pre-pandemic service levels,” LOSSAN Managing Director Jason Jewell said in a press release. “This additional round trip provides travelers with more options to choose the travel times that work best for them.”
The additional train is being funded by a $27.1 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Restoration and Enhancement Grant Program.
To mark the addition, Surfliner service will be offering a 20% discount on rides between Jan. 26 and March 13. Those booking online should use code V526.

Thank you, Charles, for the additional information.
I remember back in the mid-1970’s when there were but 3 round-trips on the L.A.-San Diego line. There was quite a fight to get a fourth round-trip added. The usual nattering negative types said it would be a flop, since Californians only wanted cars.
Instead, it was a smashing success with ridership nearly doubling over the three train-pair figures. Subsequent additions have not been quite so spectacular at once, but this corridor is certainly a success story.
The good news you give is only half the good news. Bear in mind when there were only three Amtrak San Diegans, there were zero Metrolink and zero Coasters.
