
WASHINGTON — U.S. rail traffic remained below 2024 levels for the week ending Nov. 1, 2025, the fourth straight week below previous-year figures.
According to statistics from the Association of American Railroads, traffic for the week was 496,928 carloads and intermodal unites, down 3.9% from the corresponding week a year ago. That figure included 227,209 carloads, down 0.7% from the same week a year ago, and 269,719 intermodal units, down 6.4%.
For the year to date, total U.S. traffic is 21,722,446 carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 2.4% over the first 44 weeks of 2024. Included in that figure are 9,780,010 carloads, an increase of 1.9% over the same period a year ago, and 11,942,436 intermodal units, up 2.8%.
North American volume for the week ending Nov. 1, as reported by nine U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, totals 688,664 carloads and intermodal units, a decline of 3.1% from the same week last year. The 333,804 carloads are a 1.9% decline from the corresponding week a year ago, while the 354,860 intermodal units are down 4.2%. For the year to date, the North American volume of 29,913,818 carloads and intermodal units is a 2% gain over the first 44 weeks of 2024.
In Canada, volume for the week was 95,112 carloads, down 1.8% from a year ago, and 71,350 intermodal units, up 1.9%. Through 44 weeks, the total of 7,132,476 carloads and intermodal units is up 1.7% from 2024. Mexican traffic included 11,483 carloads, down 21.3% from the same week a year ago, and 13,791 intermodal units, up 12.9%. The year-to-date volume for Mexico of 1,058,896 carloads and intermodal units is down 3.7% from the same period last year.
