CALGARY — Canadian Pacific says it has become the first North American freight railroad to take part in the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. More than 15,000 companies in more than 160 countries are part of the program, launched in 2000, for the development, implementation, and disclosure of socially responsible business practices.
“CP’s participation in the UN Global Compact marks an important milestone as we advance our commitments and position as a sustainability leader in the rail industry,” CP CEO Keith Creel said in a press release. “CP is proud to join thousands of other companies globally committed to sustainable and responsible business action.”
In joining, CP commits to following 10 principles regarding human rights, labor, environmental, and anti-corruption practices, and to supporting 17 sustainable development goals, among them “responsible consumption and production.”
