BOSTON — Keolis North America will remain operator of Virginia Railway Express under a new contact awarded under a competitive procurement process, the company has announced.

The new contract is effective July 2026 and has the potential to expand to 15 years. It continues Keolis operations of the VRE commuter service that began in 2010.

“We are honored that VRE has once again placed its trust in Keolis,” Brad Thomas, CEO of Keolis North America, said in a press release. “This renewal underscores the operational excellence our teams deliver each day, and we remain committed to the highest standards of safety, reliability, and customer service as we support the DMV region’s mobility needs.”

Keolis will continue to operate 32 weekday trains on two routes covering 90 miles, using a fleet of 20 locomotives and 1,009 passenger cars. More than 100 Keolis employees are involved in equipment and facilities maintenance.

Keolis is also the contract operator of Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail services, and operates bus transit systems throughout North America. More information is available at the Keolis website.
