A Norfolk Southern manifest freight led by DC-to-AC conversion AC44C6M No. 4093 approaches Atlanta’s Inman Yard on June 13, 2025. Turmoil at Norfolk Southern was Trains’ top story of the year in 2024; a review of 2025’s top stories begins today. David Lassen

Trains’ annual review of the year’s top stories begins today, in a new, slightly abridged format.

After several years of addressing the top 10 stories of the year, we’ve trimmed the list slightly. This year, we’ll be counting down the top five stories starting later this week; before then, we’ll take a look at significant stories in transit, preservation, passenger, and the overall rail industry that didn’t make the top five. We’ll begin today with a look at a very eventful year in transit; tomorrow, we’ll look at the year in Preservation in a story on the Trains Magazine page of Trains.com, before switching back to Trains Pro for the rest of the series.

Last year, turmoil at Norfolk Southern was our top story of the year. As has become customary, we’ll follow up the conclusion of the countdown by reviewing the top stories of each year since 2018.

We welcome your thoughts on the new format or the year-end package in general.

Happy Holidays to everyone from the Trains staff and our contributors.
