U.S. weekly rail traffic remains below 2024 levels

WASHINGTON — U.S. rail traffic was down by a narrow margin for the week ending Nov. 22, the seventh straight week where traffic has been below 2024 levels.

According to statistics from the Association of American Railroads, volume for the week was 516,110 carloads and intermodal units, down 0.9% from the same week a year ago. That includes 234,592 carloads, up 2%, and 281,518 intermodal units, down 3.2%.

Through 47 weeks of 2025, total U.S. volume is 23,225,929 carloads and intermodal units, up 2% from the same period a year ago. That includes 10,462,354 carloads, an increase of 1.8%, and 12,763,575 intermodal units, up 2.1%.

North American volume for the week, as reported by nine U.S., Canadian, and Mexican railroads, was 708,882 carloads and intermodal units, a decline of 0.1% from the corresponding week in 2024. The 343,457 carloads for the week are an increase of 1.9% from a year ago; the 365,425 intermodal units are a decline of 2%. For the year to date, North American volume is 31,955,940 carloads and intermodal units, a 1.8% increase from the first 47 weeks of 2024.

In Canada, traffic for the week was 96,121 carloads, up 1.5% over the same week a year ago, and 70,202 intermodal units, also up 1.5%. Through 47 weeks, the total Canadian volume of 7,619,166 carloads and intermodal units is an increase of 2.3%. Mexican volume for the week was 12,744 carloads, up 1.5%, and 13,705 intermodal units, up 7.4%. The year-to-date volume of 1,110,845 carloads and intermodal units is a decline of 5.6% from the same point a year ago.
