In this episode, David shares a proven technique for adding and shaping a rustic course of ballast along the rails of the Olympia & Sand Creek On30 logging layout. But first he works to complete several scenery details, including realistic fencing, water effects, muddy cow paths, and more along the terrain and trackwork too! 1. Now that the track is ballasted, is it time for a few quick shots of engine and cars actually moving back and forth to deliver and pick up carloads, moving briefly from “model” to “railroading”?

  2. At a recent Mid Central Region Convention, Mike Wolf demonstrated an alternative method for treating water in ponds and creeks using UV-Cured Resin. One of its advantages is that it has no side creep. He added the resin, which has a consistency like maple syrup, to the pond. He added a drop of acrylic paint to the resin and slowly stirred it with a wooden stick, leaving the resin free of bubbles. He then held a UV light over it for a few minutes, and it cured quickly and became very hard. He also applied the resin to a sloping rock face to mimic a small spring. The only downside is that it costs more than some other products. It would have been great for your cow tank and other small product projects.

  3. Hello Jonathan, good catch.

Depending upon the time of year, in the late afternoon, the sun comes in through the basement window that is around the corner from the layout. That is natural sunlight in the final shot. I have a large card to block it, but was trying to wrap up the shoot day and didn’t bother employing it for the shot.

    Thanks for the note!

  4. In the “farewell” scene, there appears to be a white irregular shaped stripe from the front edge of the layout back to about the place you were placing the coal. Is this an in process project? Glue that isn’t dry? Or is it simply a lighting hotspot in the video?
