Trains LIVE — Joseph Lister

Trains LIVE — 09-28-2022 — The Mayo Clinic ranks among the world’s preeminent medical facilities. As Doctors Will and Charlie Mayo expanded the care-giving clinic started by their parents in 1864, little did they realize that their reputation would draw people in need of help from all corners of the globe.

At first, the Mayo brothers tended the ill from a single location in Rochester, Minnesota. How does one get to Rochester in the early 1900s? By train. Ambulances from the Mayo Clinic could be seen on a daily basis greeting Chicago & North Western Railway trains at the Rochester station to transport patients to the clinic. Attention was given to all aspects of care by the clinic, including transportation.

This week, Bob Lettenberger talks with Daniel Liedtke, National Railroad Museum curator, about a unique railcar, the Joseph Lister, designed specifically to provide transportation to the Mayo Clinic. The National Railroad Museum has restored this Chicago & North Western Pullman opening an interesting window to the rail travel of the past.

Join us as we walk through the Joseph Lister and learn about this unique Pullman designed to give comfort to those who needed it most.
