JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the Port Authority-Trans Hudson fire that sent nine people to the hospital today (Monday, Aug. 4, 2025).

The fire broke out under an eastbound PATH train at the Newport station in Jersey City about 6:20 a.m. The news site Gothamist reports 13 people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, with nine hospitalized for further evaluation. WABC-TV reports all nine had been released by this afternoon.

PATH service on the Hoboken-World Trade Center and Journal Square-33rd Street lines was restored by noon after being halted for much of the morning. WABC-TV reports that by the time the Newport station reopened, there were no visible signs of the incident.

NJ Transit rail and bus service cross-honored tickets during the disruption, as did New York Waterways ferries.

  1. Ah, Glory Be To the Father, The Son, And The Holy Spirit …. I’m signed in under a new password. (For now at least, as long as it holds). Thank you Mr. Lassen!

Totally off topic, completely off topic. I think I know why METRA ticket sales are down. People aren’t buying tickets. Was on an eight car METRA BNSF train yesterday (8 cars not bad for a Sunday, trains running hourly), packed from the floor to the double-deck ceiling with ultra-noisy teenagers (mostly girls, a few boys). No attempt to check for tickets. When I was waiting for the train at Hinsdale, I didn’t see any of the teens at the ticket kiosk.

Good to know that METRA is packing in the customers, big time, but a little more revenue would surely help. Myself, I got my $7.00 (Sunday pass) worth by seeing just how popular train transportation can be when it’s done right. Thank you METRA,

Oh and BTW, Amtrak Hiawatha is also packing them in — but to my disappointment, second platform at MKA General Micthell International Airport still a long ways to go (the skybridge and towers), months after I would think it would have been finished.

  2. Note that as of 10 a.m., the World Trade Center – NWK and Hoboken – 33rd Street lines were operating.
