OAXACA, Mexico — A 73-year-old woman died Thursday (Jan. 1) from injuries suffered in Sunday’s derailment of the Interoceanic Train, the Mexican Navy announced, raising the accident’s death toll to 14.

The Dec. 28 derailment on the trans-isthmus service between Salina Cruz and Coatzacoalcos saw one locomotive and four cars of the northbound train derail, with one car plunging 20 feet into a ravine [see “At least 13 dead …,” Trains.com, Dec. 29, 2025].

The Navy statement said that the victim had suffered severe trauma with fractures in her legs and ribs. The IMSS-Bienestar hospital in Oaxaca, where the woman was being treated, also said it had released two other patients who had been injured in the derailmentm, while five remain hospitalized, La Jornada reports.

The investigation into the incident is continuing. Operation of the government-owned cross-isthmus railway, the Ferrocarril del Istmo de Tehuantepec, remains suspended. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced officials will seek international certification that the route is safe before it resumes operation, Omnia reports.

  1. Wonder it that is supposed to be 200 feet and or 20 meters (+60 feet). 20 feet doesn’t look right as per pic and probably a lot better chance of survival.
