Logos of the Virginia Rail Passenger Authority and AmtrakRICHMOND, Va. — Amtrak and the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority will launch new express bus service between Richmond and Washington, D.C., this Saturday, March 7, as part of ongoing efforts to address service changes because of the ongoing Long Bridge project.

The Amtrak Connection service to and from Richmond will accommodate morning travel north to Washington and late afternoon return by either bus or rail. Reservations can be made online at this page of the Amtrak website.

Bus service had previously been launched on Jan. 12 to serve the Hampton Roads area to accommodate the Long Bridge project, which requires an extensive midway work window for the next five years [see “Amtrak, VRE adjust schedules …,” Trains.com, Dec. 4, 2025].

“When we implemented our service changes in January, we emphasized that our teams would closely monitor ridership and look for opportunities to do more for our passengers,” VPRA Executive Director DJ Stadtler said in a press release. “This new Amtrak Connection service is a direct result of passengers asking for another option for travel between Richmond and Washington, and working together with Amtrak, we are doing all we can to meet that need.”
