SEATTLE — Amtrak has topped out the steel structure for its new Maintenance and Inspection facility at Seattle’s King Street Yard, one of several facilities under construction nationwide to accommodate maintenance for its new Airo equipment fleet.

The project to date has taken more than 200,000 worker hours, and involved installation of approximately 1.8 million pounds of pre-engineered metal building steel and more than 12,500 cubic yards of concrete for the structure and its adjacent parking deck. Construction will continue through 2026.

Similar projects are in progress in Boston and Washington [see “Amtrak starts work …,” Trains.com, Nov. 7, 2025]. All three projects will feature longer structures able to accommodate the longer, semi-permanently coupled Airo trainsets. The Amtrak Inspector General said in a report late last year that the company could face some issues operating the Airo and NextGen Acelas later in their delivery process because some maintenance facilities will not be completed in time [see “Shortage of maintenance facilities …,” Trains.com, Dec. 22, 2025].
