RICHMOND, Va. — Amtrak service between Richmond and Newport News, Va., will remain suspended until Saturday, Nov. 1, as the result of last weekend’s CSX derailment, the passenger operator has announced.

The 70-mile Richmond-Newport News segment is served by one daily round trip. Amtrak said it has arranged substitute bus service.

The Oct. 25 derailment involved two locomotives and 53 cars of coal, and led to spills of coal and diesel fuel into wetlands at the accident site [see “CSX coal train derails …,” Trains.com, Oct. 25, 2025]. WRIC-TV reports that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Environmental quality remain at the scene. “At this time, DEQ observes that CSX is implementing all appropriate containment and recovery measures for the fuel release,” an agency representative told the station. “The amount of diesel fuel released is still under investigation.”
